This year’s Product Runway 2012 event was bigger and better than the 2011 show. As this annual charity event gains popularity and notoriety, the stakes are set higher and the teams go all out with their designs. This year, there were over twenty entries from various Houston architecture and interior firms as well as design schools.
Product Runway is a charity event inspired by the TV show, Project Runway. The basic premise of Product Runway is that teams of architecture and interior designers are given a specific theme or challenge around which they must design a couture runway garment. This year’s theme was based on travel – each team was assigned a city and time period on which they could base their garment. The stipulation is that the garment must be made out of materials common to the industry. Each design team is paired with two product vendors that supply the materials needed for the garment. It is not unusual to see items like carpet, tile, vinyl, and upholstery strutted down the runway. The use of at least one hard material and one soft material is required in varying percentages, making it an even bigger challenge.
The best part is that ticket sales and underwriters support all goes to a local charity, The Houston Furniture Bank. This great charity helps furnish area homes with gently used furniture. In addition to the great cause, all of the models are volunteers from the participating design teams. Area businesses donated time and talent in the way of hair, makeup and modeling coaching for all the participants.
Enjoy the video and images (Two separate pages in the album above) and be sure to come out next year to see it all in person! I’m sure 2013 will be a show you don’t want to miss.
