What is it: Kunsthaus, Bregenz Austria by Peter Zumthor
Why its awesome: It looks like a glass building, right? You don’t actually see any of that glass when you’re inside. Why is it a big deal? Because the gallery spaces are completely day-lit. The exterior glass facade allows light to pass through, and diffuses down through a glass ceiling in each gallery space. It is pretty cool to stand inside a gallery that has all concrete walls and still have daylight in the space.
As a side note, it makes for great photos ops (what do you think architecture students do in their spare time?). This isn’t too far from another of Zumthor’s designs, Therme Vals.
